Mental Health Crisis: Voluntary vs Involuntary Commitment in Colorado

Summary:

Mental health Crisis can be overwhelming for everyone; the client, the family, and the professionals working with the individual. It is crucial to know how to help a client who is experiencing a mental health crisis and what steps to take to provide the most appropriate interventions. At times, mental health professionals might have to assess for a client’s danger to self/ danger to others and grave disability and determine if a client is safe to discharge home. In this training, we will discuss what MI holds when to initiate and what are the steps to admit a client experiencing a mental health crisis into a psychiatric hospital.

Learning Objectives: 

– Learn about mental health crisis and the ways to de-escalate them.

– Learn about involuntary commitment ( MI hold ) in Colorado and when to initiate it.

– Learn about danger to self / danger to others and grave disability.

– Learn about the difference between Involuntary Commitment ( MI hold ) and Emergency Commitment ( EC hold )
